Topic:

""Catastrophic galaxy collisions and the birth of quasars"

Guest Speaker
Mariana Lazarova

My research interests are in the evolution of some of the brightest galaxies in the universe, the quasars. Those galaxies harbor active supermassive black holes at their centers. In those so-called Active Galactic Nuclei, gas and matter falling into the gravitational potential of the black hole is responsible for the extreme luminosity of the nucleus, which often outshines the entire galaxy itself. How and why some galaxies have active nuclei is a question of fervent scientific research. Recent findings strongly suggest that violent collisions between normal spiral galaxies might be responsible for fueling the nucleus and igniting the quasar. In my talk, I will present our current knowledge of quasars, the leading models which attempt to explain the observations, and how my particular research contributes to our understanding of quasar formation.

I am currently a 5th yr Ph.D. student at UC Riverside, working with Dr. Gabriela Canalizo on a dissertation in astronomy. I live in Riverside, and I have 2 kids: 1-yr-old Diana and 2-yrs-old Alexander.

At the end of the meeting, we will conduct our door prize raffle and Show & Tell session.
We hope you can join us.

Meeting Schedule

Directions to Meeting Location at La Sierra University:

Going west on the 91 freeway, exit at Magnolia Avenue. After exiting, make first right turn onto Pierce St. (at ARCO station) which will become Riverwalk Parkway. Proceed on Riverwalk for ~0.8 mile to Sierra Vista Avenue . Turn left on Sierra Vista and proceed to the main parking entrance.

NOTE: Campus has been under construction, and the maps do not exactly match the directions. Enter the main campus parking area and take the first right onto the Lower Campus Drive (yes, the one marked "Pedestrian Use Only" on the map) to Cossentine Hall. Proceed up the road to parking lot "F".  E. E. Cossentine Hall is the building adjacent to the parking lot. Cossentine Hall is also labeled "The World Museum of Natural History".

If you are coming from the Corona area, go east on 91 freeway and exit at Pierce Street. Turn left on Pierce and continue as stated above.
